The Sketchbook Project

So my photo project has died a cruel death. Mostly because my camera is not able to download to the computer. There is a short or something. But I will not start a new blog for my sketchbook project. There is no need.

The Sketchbook Project I just found this. I have until the end of April to fill a sketchbook for the Brooklyn Art Library. I am sure I have enough time to fill this book with some fabulous stuff. I will be sharing my work here from time to time. Between my art class and this, I am sure to find my lost inspiration.

Well I suck. I've not been able to keep up here. Combination of bad weather, working temp jobs and cleaning my house. However, I will start again at the end of this week. But will start with week 3 not week 1.

The only pictures I've taken this year so far are:

This is a picture of my daughter holding a post card from a Sgt. Mjr. Donald Spicer who is stationed in Afghanastan. As part of a class project, the kids were to write Christmas notes to the soldiers. Not every note was good enough to send out, but Clarissas made it out. She was the only one to get a cool postcard. She loves it, and was so happy with it, and I took a picture of her holding the card both front and back. No it is not an artsy picture, not even a well lit one, but there is a lot of emotion behind it.

And as of 1/20/11, they are the only 2 picture I've taken...pathetic I know.

No Flash Photography, No Audio or Video equipment, No SLR camera's with Zoom Lenses Digital or otherwise....yeah right. I was descrete, I was in the 2nd Mezz, and had my 18-200mm zoom lens. No flash needed since I set the ISO to 1600. I got some pretty good shots for trying to hide the camera. I love this particular shot because it has movement and pattern.

I have never been to see the Rocketts before. I lived in New York all of my life, and for the past few years I have wanted to go, but it was too expensive. Oddly enough, the year I don't have a job is the year I can go. Me and my daughter went, although my son is home for the Thanksgiving holiday, he had no interest, and mom didn't want to go. We had a good time, this was a great treat for us.

I went alone to the New York Botanical Gardens and saw some beautiful color on the trees, but when I went into the Gift Shop it was Christmas!! Lots of pretty shiny things met me, so I snapped away. These are small aluminum table top trees.

Clock in the middle of Grand Central Terminal. My first shot in Black & White with the camera. I've had it for about 18 months and hadn't shot in Black and White until now. I wasn't sure my camera did it, but I dug deeper and found out it did. I am happy with the results, I will be shooting in Black and White more often.

I find the best way to duplicate a good shot is to look at the Exif data. On an SLR that can be set. In going through my archives, I pulled out a few of the best shots I've taken. Some were on a DSLR and others a Point and Shoot. It might be interesting to attempt to set the DSLR to the same settings the Point and Shoot has to see if I can get a similar shot. The shots I took with the Point and Shoot were shortly before I bought the DSLR, I had had the Point and Shoot for a few years and had mastered its usage. The DSLR was a whole new animal. I still have not learned many of the features, and I am hoping by the end of this year to get more shots like the ones featured in this post. Most of these were 'lucky' shotes, except for the night one. So by studying the Exif data, I can learn.

Another shot taken with the Point & Shoot that came out wonderful. Shot it in B&W. Another one of those shots where my daughter didn't pose. Indoors at a restaraunt and the lighting was bad, but somehow, the photo came out nicely, even without flash.

I had longed to take a good night show. One without blur. I've managed to get some hand held shots but they still were slightly blurred. One day, when looking out my living room window on a cold February morning, I noticed how pretty the bridge looked. I got out my camera and perched it on my windowsill. I set it to a slow shutter speed and pressed the timer. I didn't want any camera movement at all. This was the onlyl night shot that ever worked.

I was positioned on the sidewalk trying to take a picture of the MetLife Building. When a passerby said "Look Up and take a picture of that." So I did. This was taken with a simple Point & Shoot. One doesn't always need a fancy, expensive camera to get a good shot.

We walked around Chelsea, New York. It was a little chilly. However, this doesn't stop street vendors. I saw this man hanging around the art vendors and what struck me about him was that he looked a lot like the late actor Rick Aviles. I took a few shots but this one stood out to me because he seems to stand apart from the others. He is present but not really. I was working on my "rules of three" here and work with the composition and color. Lighting also played a part as I got the sunlight to reflect off of his right side.

My friend is doing a year long photo project. She takes a bunch of pictures during the week and then picks the best one and talks about it. I thought it was a good idea and a good way to improve on my photography.

I will start now (week 44), but I will restart at the begining of 2011. This blog will have fewer posts than my other blog since this is a project based blog.

The project week will run from Monday - Sunday.
